"25-year-old goes 555 days without a heart"

25-year-old goes 555 days without a heart

Without a heart to pump oxygenated blood around the body, you die pretty quickly. Transplants though, are hard to come by, which is why scientists are looking into using CRISPR to allow pigs to host human-like hearts. In the meantime, however, one 25-year-old man has proved that it's possible to live over a year while literally heartless.

'Stan Larkin and his 'artificial heart'

Stan Larkin went a massive 555 days wearing an 'artificial heart' backpack, which filled in after his ticker was removed while he awaited a transplant donor. Both he and his brother Dominique were diagnosed with familial cardiomyopathy as teenagers - a terrible condition where your heart can fail without warning. Both siblings were on the transplant list for years, and eventually had their hearts removed to make way for healthy donor ones. For the duration of the wait, both brothers were fitted with a 13.5 pound backpack that connects directly to the cardiovascular system and takes over where the heart leaves off.

While implantable defibrillators and similar technology can assist with partial heart failure, this device - known as Syncardia - is designed to be used when both sides of the heart fail.

While Dominique only needed the device for a couple of weeks, Stan was plugged into his 24 hours per day for 555 days, finally receiving a full transplant on May 9, 2016.

Larkin stunned doctors by being able to continue playing basketball, despite having a backpack strapped to his back 24 hours a day. "He really thrived on the device," said Jonathan Haft, of cardiac surgery at the University of Michigan, who carried out his surgery.

"Man who lives without a heart"

Stan now plans to take one step at a time - he's even staying off the basketball court for a little while. "I'll probably run a few pick-up games, but not right away. I haven't taken a shot yet without the backpack hooked up. I just want to put the heart to use," he said.

This College Student Built an Awesome Tiny Home to Avoid Debt

University of Texas at Austin junior, Joel Weber, built a tiny house for $20,000 and now he's going to live his post-grad life debt free, thanks to the small mortgage and low utility costs. Even better, he gets to live his life in what looks like the ultimate tree house that you dreamed about when you were growing up.
As a design student, Joel used the skills he learned in school to create the floor plan for his extremely humble abode. According to today, the house has a main bed loft, a reading area, desk, and mini pantry. There's also a kitchen that has a mini fridge, stainless steel workstation, water heater, and propane-powered stove and oven.

Joel's next project is to install a toilet because for now he's using a guesthouse on his property. In the future he also hopes to install solar panels and a rainwater collector.
See how incredible Joel's tiny house is here, and start dreaming up your own.

How Much Paper Does It Take to Stop a .50-Cal Bullet?

You may know the story of how President Teddy Roosevelt was shot just before a speech, but the 50 pages of paper in his pocket helped slow the projectile enough that he managed to orate for over 90 minutes before going off to the hospital. How thick would that packet of paper need to be if it had been a .50-cal headed his way at point-blank range? A lot thicker.
After already tackling questions like
What's the best gun for shooting open a lock ? and what if you drill bits in a shortgun?, the guys at Demolition Ranch just took to firing .50-cal rounds into stacks and stacks of paper to see exactly how far they could get through. Any guesses?

  • Enjoy it

Surprisingly enough, two sets of five reams of paper—that's 5,000 sheets in total—weren't enough to stop the a .50-cal in its tracks. Two separate bullets, one an Armour-piercing tracer round, made it seven reams (3,500 sheets) in before escaping out the side, probably due to the way somoe of the reams reel back on impact. That's over twice as many pages as you'll find in the typical copy of War and Peace, and thicker ones at thatWay too many to ever fit in your front shirt pocket.
